How to choose a bike light

  • Seeing vs being seen. Unlit roads and trails need 800 lumens or more. Lit urban streets need a bright, wide, attention-grabbing light rather than raw output.

How many lumens do I need for road cycling?

For lit streets, 200 to 400 lumens is enough to be seen and to spot potholes. For unlit lanes and off-road, 800 to 1,500 lumens is the realistic range.

Is a flashing or steady light better?

Steady light lets drivers judge your distance and speed; flashing light is more attention-grabbing. Many riders run a steady front light and a flashing rear.

Will a bright bike light dazzle oncoming traffic?

An unshaped high-output beam will. Look for a light with a horizontal cut-off, or angle the beam down so the hotspot lands on the road ahead of you.
