How to choose a camping lantern

• Area light, not a beam. A lantern should light a whole tent or table evenly. Diffused output matters more than lumens.
• Colour temperature. Warm white is easier on the eyes at a campsite; cool white shows detail better for repairs.
• Mounting. Magnetic bases, hanging hooks and tripod threads decide where the light can actually go.
• Power bank. If it is your outage light, a lantern that also charges a phone earns its place.

How many lumens do I need in a camping lantern?

250 to 750 lumens lights a tent or table comfortably. Higher output is useful for a whole campsite or a garage, but it will shorten runtime considerably.

Can I use a flashlight as a lantern instead?

Are LED lanterns safe inside a tent?

Yes. Unlike gas lanterns they produce no flame, no carbon monoxide and very little heat, which is why they are the standard recommendation for enclosed spaces.
