Short answer: a rechargeable flashlight is best for everyday use, but an emergency kit should also have a light that runs on AA batteries. AAs are sold everywhere, store for years, and do not depend on the power grid, which is exactly what fails in a hurricane or long outage. Why AA batteries still matter in an emergency

Rechargeable lights are great until the power has been out for three days and every battery in the house is flat. An AA flashlight solves that problem in three ways:

  • Availability. AA batteries are sold at gas stations, grocery stores and hardware stores everywhere, and neighbors are likely to have spares.
  • Shelf life. Alkaline AAs are typically rated to store for up to 10 years, and lithium AAs for up to 20. A charged lithium-ion flashlight slowly loses charge sitting in a drawer.

Be realistic about output: like any light running on alkaline cells, it is brightest on fresh batteries and dims as they drain. Use high for short bursts and medium or low for long outages.
